The New Year, the New You?

It's that time of year to start anew, set our intentions, say goodbye to bad habits, futile mindsets or goals not reached. We begin with the optimism of embracing change, but oftentimes our old habits and mindsets creep in when we least expect. How do we recreate ourselves, capture change and allow it to stick? Do we start small, read another Self-Help book, take a course, begin to meditate?

We live in an age of exhaustive options and this can be both good and overwhelming. So how do we move forwards and stay successful with the desired transformation? Short answer: embrace the past to enliven your future. Essentially, when we reflect on where we've been we are more likely to increase our awareness of how we direct our future.

New Year's Exercise: scan the year prior, month by month, writing out (yes, I do mean actual pen and paper) 3-4 highlights for each month while staying aware of thoughts and feelings that arise as you write. Then, once all 12 months are completed, answer the following questions:

  • What was the riskiest move I made this year and what was the outcome?

  • What was the wisest decision I made and what areas of my life did it impact?

  • What did I discover about myself this year and what did I do with that discovery?

  • What was my greatest challenge and how did I meet it?

Delving into the watery world of our feelings helps us regain insight and better plan for the future.
