Travel for a Change in Perspective

Joe Dispenza, in his book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, discusses the importance of throwing a wrench into your daily routine to introduce a new perspective. He suggests taking a different route to work, changing your daily meditation up or inserting an activity you wouldn't normally do. Why? It's good for your brain. It will more likely cause you to entertain a different thought and with that new thought it is more plausible you will shift your thinking. This fresh perspective exercises your brain by causing your neurons to fire differently, utilizing a pathway you haven't used. More neuronal firing=greater brain utilization.

Since I love to travel I suggest travel for this change in perspective. For many of us, travel is as easy as walking over to the fridge to grab a cool beverage while for others it is a stressful, time-consuming and costly feat that seems out of reach. For the latter, I suggest starting out with marking a date on your calendar to initiate the commitment. This simple gesture begins to create an opening in your mindset that the possibility exists. Bam! Change is about to happen.

Steps Towards Travel Success:

  • Realistically plan the amount of days you can devote to your trip.

  • Decide if it will be a road trip, train ride or air getaway. You'd be surprised at how cost effective travel can be to nearby destinations you've never explored.

  • Enlist a friend to join you or take time alone. Have a family and spouse? Consider time away for yourself as an investment in the success of your family. Taking time for ourselves allows us to reboot our nervous system, clarifies perspective and can make you more present for your family.

  • Pay for the first leg of your trip ahead of time.

  • As time permits, spend free moments in the evening researching places to stay until you find a suitable match for your conveneince and budget.

  • Plans change! Stay flexible! Be aware of your expectations and cultivate an attitude of flexibility. You never know how events are leading you towards strengthening your resilience and allowing you to meet situations that serve as a springboard for your future successes.
